Les pauvres âmes ont tendance à penser que tous ceux dont elles lisent ou entendent parler et qui sont allés au ciel, y sont allés parce qu'ils étaient si bons et si saints. Pourtant, aucun d'entre eux, aucun des hommes qui sont maintenant au ciel (Jésus-Christ seul est accepté), n'y est jamais parvenu autrement que par le pardon des péchés. Et cela nous amènera aussi plus haut, même si nous ne sommes pas à la hauteur de beaucoup d'entre eux en matière de sainteté et de grâce.

Poor souls are apt to think that all those whom they read of or hear of to be gone to heaven, went thither because they were so good and so holy. Yet not one of them, not any man that is now in heaven (Jesus Christ alone accepted), did ever come thither any other way but by forgiveness of sins. And that will also bring us higher, though we come short of many of them in holiness and grace.
